Things to do in Gladstone

There may not appear to be a whole lot of things to do in Gladstone at first glance as the town is small, quaint and a step back in time.  However, a walk around this town reveals there is a lot to offer visitors to the Macleay Valley Coast region.  Nestled on the stunning river bank of the Macleay River, to have a really good look around and take in the 20 local and beautifully preserved buildings, start with a stroll from one end of the village to the other.  It is an easy and picturesque walk through Gladstone with its lovely relaxed feel as you stroll along the flat streets taking in the buildings and gardens of the town.  Dotted along the walk, you will see art galleries showing the talents of the local artisans from garden art to jewellery.  There are several specialty shops dotted along the riverbank streets with local wares and clothing and some have products from overseas.  Gladstone offers a riverside cafe and historic pub for breakfast, lunch and snacks and the use of the fine local produce from the Macleay Valley Food Bowl.  However, one of the biggest highlights in the Gladstone Markets which are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 9am to 1pm at Memorial Park on the riverbank opposite the Heritage Hotel. The market has quality, local, hand-picked stallholders featuring artists, ceramics and a photographer; gourmet/fine foods including jams, local farm fresh produce, preserves, chutneys and locally made muesli style products; as well as handmade soaps and locally produced organic body products and native plants.
