Kempsey Riverside Markets Are Waste-Wise

The new Kempsey Riverside Market, held on the first Saturday of each month, has been a great success with hundreds of locals and visitors alike enjoying the beautiful riverside location, music and high quality products on offer.

The Market, developed by the Kempsey Chamber of Commerce in partnership with North Coast TAFE, Midwaste and Kempsey Shire Council, aims to provide high quality goods, fresh produce and an enjoyable experience for visitors with live entertainment on the banks of the beautiful Macleay River.

The market committee has worked closely with partner organisations to integrate best practice in event waste management with recycling, organic waste collection and reusable bags available on site and aims to be plastic bag free.  North Coast TAFE Sustainability Officer Wendy Grant commented ‘The market committee have been leading the way in the Valley in making their market waste-wise. Kempsey Shire Council, North Coast TAFE and Midwaste have supported this effort with advice, waste stations providing recycling and organics bins to enable visitors to recycle on site, a water station to encourage re-use of water bottles and play a role in educating the wider community.’ Stall holders having been also been proactive and keen to promote waste-wise behaviour providing 100% compostable cups and plates and no plastic bags. Market goers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, or good quality calico bags are available for sale at each market for only $2 each. The next market will be held on Saturday 1st March, 8am – 1pm and further information is available on 0456 658 979 or visit www.kempseyriversidemarkets.org.au.
