The Slim Dusty Festival Kempsey replaces the previous event known as Slim Dusty Memories Festival which ran for 17 years. The core audience included travellers, ‘Grey Nomads’, fans of traditional country music and over 55’s. While attendance numbers had been relatively consistent for many years, the changing festival landscape and increased competition from a growing number of events across Australia posed a real threat to the sustainability of the festival in its current form.
The 2022 version of the festival will feature a number of high profile and mainstream country artists such as Kasey Chambers, Felicity Urquhart, The Bushwackers, Luke O’Shea and more. It will also include country music sub-genres such as bluegrass, rockabilly, folk, country rock, alt country etc. Special events and featured programming such as a family Bush Dance, Songs and Stories’ (songwriter’s workshops) ‘In Conversation’ and Bush Poetry, will create some unique entertainment for audiences they will not experience at other. The event will also engage with the local Indigenous Community by coordinating activities through Uncle Jimmy Thumbs Up.
